US Now Among the 21 Travel-Restricted Countries, Says Bureau of Immigration



In the United Kingdom (UK), a new variant strain of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus, has been detected and it is predicted to potentially be more rapidly transmissible than other circulating strains. This new variant is referred to as “SARS-CoV-2 VOC 202012/01” or “B117.”

As of December 13, 2020, a total of 1,108 cases infected with new variant have been detected in the UK.

Following this news, on December 23, 2020, it was announced through the official Facebook page of the Office of the Presidential Spokesperson that all UK flights to the Philippines will be temporarily suspended starting December 24, 2020, until December 31, 2020.

Updated Travel Restriction Guidelines

And on January 2, 2021, the official Facebook page of the Bureau of Immigration, Republic of the Philippines has published an advisory containing the “Updated Travel Restriction Guidelines of All Travelers from Countries with Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 B117 Strain (SARS-COV2 Variant Detected in the United Kingdom”.

The said guidelines contain further details on the inclusion of the United States of America (US) among the countries subject to travel restrictions. It also has information on the rules applicable to Filipinos and foreign passengers transiting through a country covered by the travel restrictions.
