Researchers Reveals Order of COVID-19 Symptoms

Researchers have recently found out the order in which Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) symptoms appear.

Order of the COVID-19 Symptoms

According to the researchers, the most likely initial symptoms are:

  • fever
  • cough and muscle pain
  • nausea and/or vomiting
  • then diarrhea

The study made by the said researchers is called Modeling the Onset of Symptoms of COVID-19 and it has been published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health on August 13, 2020, with doctoral candidate Joseph Larsen from the University of Southern California (USC) as the lead author.

Since COVID-19 has symptoms similar to other common illnesses, research has been made hypothesizing the order of the occurrence of its symptoms. This, according to USC, could help patients and medical professionals alike to distinguish COVID-19 from other respiratory diseases.

Why the Order of the COVID-19 Symptoms Matter

Based on Larsen and his colleagues’ study, knowing the order of COVID-19 symptoms could help doctors rule out other illnesses or plan how to treat patients.

“This order is especially important to know when we have overlapping cycles of illnesses like the flu that coincide with infections of COVID-19. Doctors can determine what steps to take to care for the patient, and they may prevent the patient’s condition from worsening.”

– Peter Kuhn, professor of medicine, biomedical engineering, and aerospace and mechanical engineering at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, one of the authors of the study

“The order of the symptoms matter. Knowing that each illness progresses differently means that doctors can identify sooner whether someone likely has COVID-19, or another illness, which can help them make better treatment decisions.”

– Joseph Larsen, University of Southern California, lead author of the study

The Study About the Order of COVID-19 Symptoms

The authors predicted the order of symptoms with the data collected by the World Health Organisation (WHO) from more than 55,000 confirmed cases in China.

In addition, they also studied a dataset of nearly 1,100 cases collected by the China Medical Treatment Expert Group via the National Health Commission of China.

Data from 2,470 cases in North America, Europe, and the Southern Hemisphere that were reported to health authorities from 1994 to 1998 have also been examined by the researchers to compare the order of COVID-19 symptoms to influenza.

Other than Larsen and Kuhn, other study co-authors were James B. Hicks of the University of Southern California, Margaret R. Martin of Nexus Development PA LLC, and John D. Martin at NanoCarrier Co., Ltd., in Chiba, Japan.
