Panagbenga Opening Parade cancelled as a proactive response to 2019-nCoV

The city government of Baguio, together with the Department of Health – Cordillera Administrative Region, has decided to cancel upcoming activities in the city through a press briefing held at the Baguio City Hall this afternoon.

As of the press briefing on Panagbenga Opening Parade and health advisory on 2019 Novel Coronavirus, Mayor Benjamin Magalong announced the cancellation of several activities including the opening parade tomorrow, February 1, 2020.

“After due deliberation, I would like to make an announcement that I am cancelling the Panagbenga street parade tomorrow,” the mayor said.

He also mentioned about postponing the scheduled Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) meet on February 16-21, 2020 until summer.

Furthermore, the city head official said, “We are also cancelling all events that will draw crowds and visitors in the next three weeks. There will postponement of these activities. I am also cancelling the pedestrianization which would start supposedly this coming Sunday.”

The opening of Baguio Blooms Exposition and Exhibition at the Baguio Convention Center will however push through tomorrow.

According to the mayor, the cancellation of the upcoming events is a proactive measure as the safety and health of both locals and tourists in the city of Baguio is far more important right now. He also made it clear in a statement that the cancellation has nothing to do with the online petition to postpone the entire festival which started yesterday.

On the other hand, no definitive decision has been made yet regarding the Panagbenga grand parades set on February 29 and March 1, 2020.

In line with this, classes for the tertiary level (both public and private) will resume tomorrow as of Mayor Magalong’s Executive Order No. 29, S. 2020.

On PMA Homecoming

The Philippine Military Academy Homecoming event’s cancellation will be decided upon by the institution as stated by the mayor.
