Nationwide Measles, Rubella and Polio Vaccination Starts October 26 in CAR




A nationwide Measles Rubella – Oral Polio Vaccine Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-OPV SIA) is to be conducted by the Department of Health (DOH), together with the Local Government Units, starting on October 26, 2020.

  • Children who are 9-59 months old will be given Measles-Rubella vaccine
  • Children 0-59 months old will be provided with an oral Polio vaccine

On a press release published by the DOH on October 7, 2020, Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III emphasized that the measles, rubella and polio vaccines are safe, effective and free.

Furthermore, according to the Health Chief, all healthcare workers have been trained on infection prevention and control and are provided with Personal Protective Equipment in order to be protected against Coronavirus Disease 2019 infections.

What is Measles

  • Measles is also known as tigdas
  • It is one of the most contagious diseases in the world
  • It can cause high-grade fever, rashes, cough, eye infection
  • It can lead to complications such as the following:
    • Pneumonia
    • Ear infection
    • Blindness
    • Severe diarrhea
    • Swelling of the brain

What is Polio

  • Polio is a potentially debilitating disease
  • It causes fever, neck stiffness, muscle weakness
  • It can eventually lead to lifelong paralysis

Both Diseases

  • Both diseases, if severe enough, can lead to death
  • There is no specific treatment for these illnesses
  • The only reliable protection is through vaccination

MR-OPV SIA in CAR

The Phase 1 of the nationwide Measles Rubella – Oral Polio Vaccine Supplemental Immunization Activity will be conducted from October 26, 2020 to November 25, 2020 in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and some other areas in the country. For more information about the said activity, the Public Information Office of the City of Baguio suggests you inquire to the nearest Health Center.
