According to Regional Director Francis Ray Almora of the Land Transportation Office – Cordillera Administrative Region (LTO-CAR), direct fare increase is illegal.
During a discussion with Irisan Barangay Captain Arthur Carlos, Reg. Director Almora explained why LTO Law Enforcers issued tickets to jeepney drivers who charge a fare of Php 20.00.
The director said that direct fare increase is illegal based on policies which are currently being implemented. He explained that a move for fare increase needs to go undergo the proper process. Moreover, Almora also said that under the Bayanihan Act, taking advantage of the current situation for personal gains is strictly prohibited.
Additional fare should be voluntary
However, since social distancing is being implemented among the riding public when going out to buy essentials, the director said paying additional fare is voluntary.
Almora reiterated that it should be voluntary and that passengers should not be obliged to pay additional fare.
We Heal as one and help as one
Being caught off guard, we are all greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. But we Filipinos, have long been known for our resilience and “bayanihan.” May we not forget how these traits of ours are much needed especially in times like this. May we have empathy so that truly, we heal as one by helping each one live this new normal.
