CVO to Distribute Repacked Seeds for “Survival Gardens”

No one knows just yet how long the COVID-19 pandemic would last, but hopefully not for too long. However, in the meantime, aside from relying on the food distribution that is being set up by the government for those who are under the community quarantines, growing “survival gardens” might also help.

But, what are Survival Gardens you ask? According to the website Gardening Know How, Survival Gardens are vegetable gardens that are designed to provide enough crops to permit an individual or a family to live only by relying on their garden produce.

Here in Baguio City, repacked vegetable seeds such as okra, eggplant, hybrid spinach, flowering pechay, and other fruit/vegetable-bearing plants are being prepared for distribution by the Baguio City Veterinary Office – Agricultural Services Division. These seeds are to be distributed in barangays for the establishment of “Survival Gardens.”

Also, according to the Baguio City Veterinary Office – Agricultural Services Division’s previous Facebook post (March 22, 2020), “We are urging the public that the best thing to do during these trying times is to start establishing your “survival gardens”, in 1-2 months time, you can harvest nutritious leafy vegetables for your family.” With the hashtag: #FAITH which stands for “Food Always In The Home.”

Want to avail of the seeds to start your own Survival Garden?

According to the Public Information Office – City of Baguio, to avail of the seeds, you can inquire in your respective barangays or visit CVO at Slaughter Compound on weekdays, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, following the barangay protocol before going out.

Other Reasons Why You Should Try Gardening at Home

Aside from the fact that your vegetable produce can actually provide you with something healthy to eat, there are other reasons why you should try gardening at home. Here are just some of those reasons:

  • Gardening Can Reduce Stress

Stressing out? Try gardening. This could be an enjoyable thing to do plus it could make you happy and reduce your stress, especially if you’re into growing plants.

  • It Can Strengthen Your Hands

Think of digging, planting, watering, and harvesting as an exercise for your hands. The overall process of gardening can strengthen your hands.

  • It’s a Family Bonding Opportunity

It’s up to you if you want to take care of your garden on your own, but know that gardening could also be an activity you can share with your family. You can water your plants together and happily harvest your produce together as well.

  • It Can Become Your New Hobby

Bored because of the quarantine? Try doing something that you might have not ever tried before, like putting up your own Survival Garden in your backyard. Gardening can be your new-found hobby, especially in times like this, when you cannot just go out whenever you feel like it.

Already have a vegetable garden at home?

To those who already have a vegetable or “survival” garden in your backyard, it’s the best time to take care of it more and benefit from it. Food is one of the most basic needs of man in order to survive, thus growing your very own source of food which you can easily access is truly advantageous especially during times like this, when staying at home is the best way to keep yourself and your family safe from COVID-19.
