Chinese New Year 2020 celebration in Baguio City

To welcome the Year of the Metal Rat, the Chinese Lunar New Year or Spring Festival 2020 celebration in Baguio City kicked off with a program led by the local government and the Filipino-Chinese community of the city yesterday, January 13, 2020.

In Mayor Benjamin’s Magalong’s message, he gave recognition to the Filipino-Chinese community by mentioning how they have stood out to be the people we can always rely on during times of need and opportunity.

“Beyond measure, they have stood by us, steadfast through thick and thin all through the years. That is why today, I give due acknowledgment to what they have selflessly given – their time, talent and treasure – for Baguio to continue growing into the city we all love to share,” he said.

On the other hand, Congressman Mark Go urged everyone, no matter what faith, culture or year you are born in, to learn from and adapt the characteristics of the Metal Rat.

“According to the Chinese Zodiac, people born in the Year of the Rat are generally industrious, thrifty, diligent and positive. In particular, the metal rat is characterized of having such persistence that seldom gets frustrated in adversity. Further, once they set a particular goal, they will take actions and efforts soon,” Congressman Go said.

Aside from the messages from local head officials, the opening also included a traditional lion dance by the Bell Church Athletic group and of course, the unveiling of the calendar of activities headed by Mr. Peter Ng, Chairman of the Program Committee.

According to Mr. Peter Ng, Chairman of the Program Committee, “The goal and objective of the festival is to promote better understanding and cooperation between the Filipino and Chinese communities in order to strengthen our historical friendship and unity.”

Inviting everyone to join the celebration, he also said, “As we have emphasized in every Spring Festival celebration, we greatly value relationships. And the celebration of this grand event will surely foster a closer and stronger bond between the Filipino and Chinese communities.”
