Short Background about the Philippine Independence Day
July 4th as PH Independence Day
On July 4, 1946, The United States withdrew its sovereignty over the Philippines, officially recognizing its independence. Thus, the Commonwealth of the Philippines became the Republic of the Philippines (the Third Republic).
According to the Official Gazette of the Philippines, this ceremony was marked by the Philippine Flag being raised while the U.S. flag is lowered.
The declaration has been marked by Manuel Roxas retaking his oath as President of the Philippines, eliminating the pledge of allegiance to the United States required prior to independence.
From there on, our country’s independence was celebrated on July 4th of every year until 1962.
June 12th as PH Independence Day
In the year 1962, through Proclamation No. 28, s. 1962 issued by President Diosdado Macapagal, the date of Philippine Independence was moved from July 4 to June 12 which was the date of independence from Spain proclaimed in Emilio Aguinaldo’s home in Kawit, Cavite.
“The establishment of the Philippine Republic by the Revolutionary Government under General Emilio Aguinaldo on June 12, 1898, marked our people’s declaration and exercise of their right to self-determination, liberty and independence.”
– President Macapagal in his proclamation
According to Macapagal, adopting the view of historians and political leaders, the foundation date of the nation should be June 12 since July 4 marks the day of its restoration.
Hence, this marks tomorrow, June 12, 2020, as the 122nd Independence Day of our beloved country, the Philippines.
Happy Independence Day fellow Filipinos all over the globe!
