The COVID-19 Pandemic changed our way of life, not only as an individual, not only as a nation but as a global community. While we wait for the discovery of a cure or a vaccine we would do our part to help stop the spread of the virus by staying at home. It’s already y more than a month and we still see cases on the rise. If there is one question that is in everybody’s mind right now, that is “When will this COVID-19 Pandemic End?” Fighting against an invisible enemy makes it difficult for everyone to answer that question.
Recently, however, a team from Singapore University of Technology and Design, Data Innovation Lab developed an Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) that will predict the end of the Pandemic worldwide and for every country.
The A.I. technology gathers information from the Our World in Data which contains data from confirmed cases including new confirmed cases, deaths, and population. This data combined with the codes from Milan Batista makes up the algorithm that has the capability to predict the pandemic life-cycle and predict when the Pandemic might end for each country and globally.
A Word of Caution
In their website, the team from SUTD Data-Driven Innovation Lab has cautioned readers in taking any of the predictions as absolute. The data is inaccurate to the complex of the evolving and heterogenous realities of every country. This means that the A.I. is dependent only on the data it gathered and it does not consider government policies and how people act upon the COVID-19 threat.
The researchers further caution everyone that the model and data should not be a cause for complacency or over-optimism. The predicted dates should not be a cause to loosen one’s discipline and control which could cause the turnaround of the infection.
What Does This Technology Predict?
You might be asking, then why create a model that would predict the end of the Pandemic in the first place? Knowing ahead of time should encourage everyone to work harder in keeping the virus down by strictly practicing social distancing, wearing facemasks, and following the guidelines of the quarantine. We should remember the A.I. is dependent on data based on what we are doing now to curb the virus, so if we want to end the pandemic as predicted we should continue with enforcing the guidelines of the quarantine if not double-down on it.
