10 Things You Can Do to Keep Your Cool This Summer

Summer is on its way and you might have probably felt its heat already. It’s alright to enjoy what summer has to bring every once in a while, including its sunny weather, but for the moments when you would prefer to stay cool and fresh, here are some of the things you can do to keep your cool this summer in the Philippines.

10 Things You Can Do to Keep Your Cool This Summer in the Philippines

Here are some of the ways you can try to keep your cool during summer. These following tips and Tricks are not arranged in any particular order:

1. Dress Light… Lighter!

Take a break from your day-to-day OOTD for a while and modify it to fit the weather. Summer, especially in countries such as the Philippines, is usually very hot. So from your regular t-shirt, switch to sleeveless shirt, tank top, or if you’re up to it, even crop top; from your skinny jeans; switch to skirt or shorts; and from your sneakers, switch to sandals. Summer is also one of the best seasons to take your pretty, light dresses out of the shelf.

For those who are living in cooler parts of the Philippines such as Baguio City, it’s time to put away your winter OOTD. The City of Pines might not get as warm as the rest of the country, but summer is summer, so you can still expect that there will be a rise in the temperature for this season. From your wool jacket, hoodie, trench coat, parka, sweatshirt, and turtleneck, you can now go for ¾ sleeve shirt, blouse, polo shirt, off-shoulder, or a simple t-shirt.

2. Tie Your Hair Up

Got a short hair to welcome summer? Then that might already help in keeping yourself cool during summer, but if you don’t, then better experiment with a variety of hairstyles that would. For men and women who would like to keep their hair long even during the warmer days, tie your hair up.

Thick and long hair could feel heavier during hot weather, so keep your cool by keeping your hair off your face and neck. Simple hairstyles such as a ponytail, braid, top knot bun, messy bun, man bun, half-up and the like would do, but of course, you can experiment with other hairstyles too that would fit your summer OOTD.

3. Switch to Light Bedding

Sleeping through the night during summer could be kind of a challenge especially when it’s too hot thus it’s making you sweaty. So one of the things you can do to keep your cool this summer is to be reminded to change your comforter or thick blanket into light bedding and a light blanket. If you have an air conditioner at home, then switching to light bedding might not be as necessary, but if you don’t, then light and breathable sheets would make your sleep during summer more comfortable.

4. Don’t Stay Under the Heat of the Sun

This one’s kind of obvious. One of the best things you can do to keep your cool this summer is to keep yourself from the sun, especially during its peak at 12 noon. Usually, from 11 am to 3 pm it is still extra hot outside, so if possible, in between those times, just stay indoors or relax under the shade of trees. If going outside can’t be avoided, bring an umbrella to protect yourself from the rays of the sun.

5. Time to Use the Aircon

You might have not used your air conditioner in the past few months because there’s no need for it, but since summer is a special case, you might want to use your aircon to your advantage. But what if you don’t have an air conditioner at home? Well, shopping malls, movie theaters, and even some public libraries have. So you can chill there if you want.

6. Your Fans are Waving!

Don’t have an aircon but still would prefer to stay at home rather than to walk at the malls or spend your time watching movies in an air-conditioned movie theatre to escape the warmth of summer? There’s another way. Your fans are waving so you better wave back!

That’s right. Stick with your electric fans if an air conditioner isn’t available. For those who are in Baguio City, electric fans are already more than enough to keep things cool since the City of Pines is still cooler than some parts of the country even during summer. Aside from electric fans, there are now also portable, rechargeable fans that come in different designs and sizes that you can take with you everywhere you go.

7. Stay Hydrated

Combat dehydration during this season with either water, coconut, sports drinks, or even with watermelon. Don’t forget to bring with you any of the mentioned beverages, especially water if you have to go outside. Don’t just focus on keeping yourself cool during summer but also focus on keeping yourself as healthy as possible.

8. Have Some Cooling Treats

Soups and hot beverages are truly enjoyable to eat and drink, but during summer when even the air is kind of hot? Ah, well, not as much. Cooling treats such as ice cream, ice candies, popsicles, halo-halo, mais con yelo, scrambles, smoothies, shakes, fruit and vegetable salads, yogurt, iced tea, milk tea, floats, and the like are some just some of the food and beverages could freshen up your summer. Since some of these cooling treats are easy to make, such as ice candies, halo-halo, and mais con yelo, you can make some for yourself whenever you feel like beating the summer heat.

If you’re currently at Baguio City, eating or drinking such cooling treats during summer wouldn’t make you shiver at least not as much as you would during the cold days, so try having one of these every once in a while for a cool summer experience.

9. Cold Showers Sound Cool

Whenever you don’t feel so fresh anymore because of how hot the surrounding is, taking a cold shower could help in lowering your body temperature and improve your blood circulation. This is one of the most basic things you can do to keep your cool this summer season.

10. Visit Baguio City

Baguio City, known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines, is a place where you can chill during hot days. There are many tourist spots here in the City of Pines that you can go to during your visit, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to wander around all day. If you prefer to just relax indoors, have a staycation and enjoy the weather just the same.

Bonus: Don’t Forget About Your Fur Babies

You aren’t the only one who needs to stay cool during summer. Your pets such as cats and dogs can also feel the heat so as much as possible, don’t take them out for a walk on a hot pavement especially when the sun is at its peak. It would be better if you’ll take your fur babies out for walk or playtime during the early morning or evening. Also, keep them hydrated as well.
