Winter Solstice: Philippine Nights will Be Longer than Daytime

The Sun will reach the winter solstice at 6:02 PM (PST) of Monday, December 21, 2020; based on the astronomical diary issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) for this month.

According to PAGASA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the winter solstice or the December solstice marks the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

And as for our country, the Philippines, it means that the nights will be longer than daytime.

Here is a video prepared by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, giving an overview about the Geminids Meteor Shower, the Jupiter and Saturn meetup or the “great conjunction”, and of course, the winter solstice. You may learn more about the winter solstice at the time stamp 2:22 of the video.

What Else to Look Forward to this Dec. 21

The winter solstice is not the only thing that makes the twenty-first of December special; there is also the alignment of Jupiter and Saturn. On December 21, 2020, the “great conjunction” will form what people call the “Christmas star” and you can see more details about it here.
