UP Ranks Higher in this year’s Top Universities in Asia


Among top universities in Asia, the University of the Philippines (UP) ranks 65th, in the 2020 Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings which was released yesterday, June 3, 2020.

It climbed up by 30 points after ranking at 95th place in the THE Asia University Rankings last year.


What is THE World University Rankings?

The THE World University Rankings are the only global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

It bases its scores on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators used in the THE World University Rankings that include categorized into these five areas:

  • Teaching (the learning environment): 25%
  • Research (volume, income and reputation): 30%
  • Citations (research influence): 30%
  • International outlook (staff, students, research): 7.5%
  • Industry income (knowledge transfer): 7.5%

Other Philippine University Who Made it to the List

Aside from UP, De La Salle University (DLSU) made it to the 301-350 bracket which first made it to the same list last year ranking at a higher bracket of 251-300.

Top 10 Universities in Asia

Here the following universities who made it to the Top 10 according to the THE:

  1. Tsinghua University – China
  2. Peking University – China
  3. National University of Singapore – Singapore
  4. University of Hong Kong – Hong Kong
  5. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology – Hong Kong
  6. Nanyang Technological University, Singapore -Singapore
  7. The University of Tokyo – Japan
  8. Chinese University of Hong Kong -Hong Kong
  9. Seoul National University – South Korea
  10. University of Science and Technology of China – China and Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) – South Korea

China and Hong Kong, which both have 3 universities that made it to the list, are the leading countries in the top 10.

Most Represented Asian Countries

According to the Times Higher Education, the 2020 Asia University Rankings features institutions from 30 countries.

Furthermore, for this year’s ranking, Japan is the most-represented country with 110 universities, followed by China with 81 institutions on the list and India with 56 ranked universities.
