Today is International Dog Day! | What Is It? | Why Celebrate?

Today, August 26, is the International Dog Day. This is a day to celebrate man’s best friend whether it is a mixed or pure breed. National Dog Day is not only a celebration dedicated to dogs and their owners. This day is a reminder to the public on the roles of dogs in the family and community who selflessly work to save lives and bring comfort and security.

How did International Dog Day Start?

International Dog day started as National Dog Day in the United States. It was headed by Colleen Paige, a Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert, Animal Rescue Advocate, Conservationist, Dog Trainer, and Author. She founded other holidays such as National Wildlife Day, National Cat Day among others. She founded all these to bring attention to the plight of animals around the globe.  In 2013, National Dog Day was written in the New York City Legislation and since then it was adopted by dog lovers of all nationalities.

Why August 26?

On August 26, 2004 she founded the National Dog Day, this day coincided with the day Colleen’s family adopted their first dog “Sheltie”.  Colleen was 10 years old then.

What Should We Remember on International Dog Day

As stated in their website, The mission of the International Dog Day is to “help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.”

International Dog Day in Baguio City

While celebrating this day in Baguio City is not as profound as other countries. What can be noticed is the growing number of animal advocates in the City. Recently, a group of dog advocates and dog owners has expressed their concern regarding the mandatory microchipping of dogs in the City. This prompted them to seek an audience with the City Council to share their concerns and as a result, the City has temporarily suspended the implementation of mandatory microchipping of dogs until the concerns are addressed through an amendment to the current city ordinance. This alone is a reason to celebrate International Dog Day in Baguio City.
