Today is Global Handwashing Day! Don’t Forget to Often Wash Your Hands




You might have already heard or read this countless times especially since the pandemic began, but here it goes again, often wash your hands with soap and water. Handwashing is important since it eliminates germs and even viruses that may be on your hands, thus making it one of the known ways to protect yourself from the Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19.

Moreover, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), America’s leading science-based, data-driven, a service organization that protects the public’s health; keeping hands clean can prevent one (1) in three (3) diarrheal illnesses and one (1) in five (5) respiratory infections, including cold or flu.

October 25 is Global Handwashing Day

Today is October 15, 2020 (Thursday) and the 15th of October each year is known as the Global Handwashing Day which serves as a yearly reminder of the importance of handwashing with soap and water at home, in the community, and around the world.

The World Health Organization (WHO) advised everyone to regularly clean your hands by washing with soap and water, and dry them thoroughly. It takes about as long as singing “Happy Birthday” twice to be able to properly wash your hands. If you don’t have immediate access to soap and water, you may also use an alcohol-based hand rub.


When to Wash Your Hands

Based on the COVID-19 advice for the public provided by WHO, it is important to wash your hands especially at times such as:

  • After coughing or sneezing
  • When caring for the sick
  • Before, during, and after you prepare food
  • Before eating
  • After toilet use
  • When hands are visibly dirty
  • After handling animals or animal waste
