Test Flights in Loakan Airport to Be Conducted by End of January

Test flights in Loakan Airport are to be conducted by an airline company by end of January to pave the way for the possible resumption of commercial flights. This update has been reported by the Public Information Office of the City of Baguio just last Saturday, January 16, 2021.

After the airline companies that previously served the Manila-Baguio route raised safety issues, the commercial flights in Baguio City were stopped in 2009.

And now, according to Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, the PAL Express’ management has signified its intention to conduct test flights from Manila to the Loakan Airport to evaluate the safety concerns which had been previously raised.

Last year, seventy-five (75) structures within the airport’s vicinity have been identified by the local government and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) as posing obstructions to the aircraft’s’ landing route. Thus, it was said that the structures “must be demolished.”

Furthermore, the PIO Baguio has revealed that an inventory of the structures that will be demolished and the trees that need to be cut and trimmed for posing obstructions to the flight route of the aircraft intending to land in the airport is now being conducted.

The City Buildings and Architecture Office (CBAO), in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), is the one currently working on the said inventory of the structures.

The Resumption of Flights to Help Revival of Tourism

According to the local chief executive, the resumption of flights in and out of the city will “play a key role in convincing high-end tourists to prioritize Baguio City as one of their preferred destinations.” And this will help to speed up the revival of the local tourism industry.
