Sagada partially allows ecotourism activities

Through Executive Order No. 10 – 2020, the suspension of ecotourism activities in Sagada has been lifted except for all spelunking (caving) and sunrise viewing activities.

The decision was made after joint discussions among the Department of Health (DOH), the local government unit (LGU) of the municipality, Rural Health Unit, and Sagada Stakeholders.

According to the Tourist Information Center of Sagada, the sites were only opened after satisfying the protocols of DOH. As a result, spelunking is still not allowed because the activity will require body contact during the tour. On the other hand, sunrise viewing is still discouraged since it is advised that cold temperatures can propagate viruses.

Reminders from the Tourist Information Center of Sagada

In line with this, the Tourist Information Center of Sagada has a number of reminders for tourists to keep in mind during their visits.

  1. Tours should start at 7 AM since sunrise viewing is still not allowed at any sunrise viewpoints like Ampanga Heights. This is to discourage crowds from gathering during the early hours of the day when temperature is very low.
    • Visitors can still trek to Marlboro Hills and other sites at or after 7 AM.
  2. Visitors are required to undergo assessment as advised by DOH.
    • Assessment will be done:
      • at the Tourist Information Center
      • upon checking in at accommodations
      • before starting the tour (by the respective tour guide)
  3. Owners of private establishments, innkeepers, tour guides and shuttle drivers should take the initiative to ask their presidents/representatives for their respective protocols and penalties.
