PHIVOLCS Records 136 Earthquakes after 24-hour Monitoring of Kanlaon Volcano

PHIVOLCS Monitors a Volcano in Negros after Series of Earthquakes

The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) has released an advisory at 2:00 AM today, June 22, 2020, about the ongoing series of earthquakes on the west lower flanks of Kanlaon Volcano.

136 Earthquakes within 24 Hours Recorded

Based on the PHIVOLCS Kanlaon Volcano Bulletin as of 8:00 AM today, June 22, 2020, there have been one hundred thirty-six (136) volcano-tectonic earthquakes recorded on the volcano’s western flanks within 24 hours.

Four of these earthquakes were felt at Intensities II to V in La Carlota and Bago City, Negros Occidental and Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

In addition, the agency has noted moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes at the volcano’s vent.

According to DOST-PHIVOLCS, the series of earthquakes began at 4:03 PM of June 21, 2020.

However, the largest one, registering at Magnitude 4.7, has been recorded this morning of June 22, 2020, at 1:15 AM. With this, Intensity V was felt at La Carlota City.

Furthermore, at 1:50 AM today, there are already a total of eighty-one (81) events recorded.

Kanlaon Volcano at Alert Level 1

As Kanlaon Volcano is now at Alert Level 1, PHIVOLCS reminds the public of the following:

  1. Kanlaon Volcano is at an abnormal condition and entered a period of unrest
  2. Entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) must be strictly prohibited due to the further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions
  3. Pilots must be advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejecta from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

In view of the earthquakes and volcanic activity recorded, PHIVOLCS assures the public that the Kanlaon Volcano is under close watch and that any development will be relayed to all concerned.
