Baguio Ordinance provides 20% Discount to National Athletes and Coaches

The Baguio City Council, through their Sangguniang Panlungsod Baguio Facebook page on Thursday, July 2, 2020, has called for stricter implementation of Republic Act No. 10699, an act expanding the coverage of benefits and incentives granted to national athletes and coaches, also known as the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.

On the Section 4a of Republic Act No. 10699, the Benefits and Privileges for National Athletes and Coaches, any national athlete and coach shall be entitled to the grant of twenty percent (20%) discount relative to:

• Utilization of transportation services
• Hotels and other lodging establishments
• Restaurants and recreation centers
• Purchase of medicine and sports equipment
• Admission fees charged by theaters, cinema houses and concert halls, circuses, carnivals, and other similar places of culture and amusement

This is applicable anywhere in the country for actual and exclusive use or enjoyment.

How can National Athletes and Coaches avail of the Perks

According to the Chairperson of the Committee on Youth Welfare and Sports Development and Sangguniang Kabataan President, Councilor Levy Lloyd Orcales, any national athlete or coach who presents their identification card issued by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is entitled to all privileges stipulated in RA 10699.

On a recent update provided by the Sangguniang Panlungsod Baguio, they stated that Councilor Orcales has been disappointed in the seemingly low implementation of the said law.

“As the chairperson of the Committee on Sports and Development, I am already informing all of our drugstores that such law exists and that you should comply with it,” said Orcales.

Resolution to Ensure Compliance to RA 10699

In line with this, on June 29, 2020, the Public Information Office – City of Baguio has made an update that Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has signed a resolution, requesting all government agencies to issue the necessary directives to ensure compliance of establishments to the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.
