Italy Quarantine Measures Show that it Can Help Prevent COVID-19 Spread

The number of worldwide COVID-19 cases might have indeed escalated over the past few weeks, but for some of the countries or regions which have implemented confinement measures such as Italy, the spread of the virus has somehow slowed down. This could somehow show that confinement measures such as the implementation of quarantine actually bear fruit. Two weeks ago, the number of reported cases in Italy was increasing at a daily rate of 15 percent. But the increase has slowed down to less than five percent within the past few days. While in Spain, with their previous daily increase of cases sits around 15-20 percent (15%-20%), and now, it has been reduced to around eight percent (8%).

Meanwhile in Baguio City, Philippines

Baguio City, also declared to be under a state of Enhanced Community Quarantine – has also managed to prevent further spread of the virus as no new cases of COVID-19 for the past 6 days have been recorded so far with the frontliners and local government’s efforts to flatten the curve.

Worldwide COVID-19 Cases Update

As of today, April 3, 2020 the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases around the world already spiked up to over a million (the exact count based from the Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Cases by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University is 1,015,403 as of their website’s update last April 3, 2020, 9:52:17 AM). On the other hand, the total number of cases which have recovered from the virus already reached over Two hundred thousand.

Confinement Measures Are Helping

The number might have already hit a million but that doesn’t mean we should stop hoping. In some places which have already been infected by the COVID-19, confinement measures such as the Enhanced Community Quarantine are helping in decelerating and even seizing the spread of the Coronavirus Disease. So wherever you might be amid this pandemic, if your country, your region, or your city is implementing confinement measures, follow the implemented rules, guidance, and advisories and stay home. Even Bill Gates, Co-chair of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have also mentioned on his interview with Trevor Noah about the importance of confinement measures such as lockdowns and quarantines.

When asked what he thinks needs to be done going forward, Bill Gates answered, “Well, the main tools that we have right now are the behavioral change, the social distancing, which, often means staying at home most of the time, and the testing capacity to identify who in particular needs to get isolated, and then testing their contacts to make sure that we can catch it so early that a lot of people who get sick don’t infect anyone else.”

“US and China are different. The lockdowns that we do won’t be as strictly enforced, but they are very, very important. The way we do contact tracing won’t be as invasive and so won’t be quite as perfect. But it is very good news that China, although they are maintaining a lot of measures, they are not seeing a rebound. They’re not seeing cases coming back, even though they are sending people back to the factories and sending people back to schools. And, you know, so, thank goodness, if we’re seeing a big rebound there, the idea you could keep it under control once you have a large number of cases like the US does and many countries in Europe, then it, you know, would seem almost impossible. So, it can be done. You know, China ended up with .01% of their population infected,” said Bill Gates, answering another question from the interview. In cooperation with the authorities and those who are in the frontline fighting this pandemic and also arming ourselves with knowledge through reading and research, we will be able to contain this pandemic and heal as one.
