Conduct of Rolling Markets to Continue under GCQ to Avoid Crowding in Baguio Public Market

During the Live City Hall Hour held at the Baguio City Multi-purpose Hall earlier this afternoon, May 28, 2020, the ABC President and City Councilor, Hon. Michael L. Lawana has confirmed that the conduct of rolling markets will continue while the city is under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ).

“Nung pumasok tayo sa GCQ actually what we are thinking then with the Mayor is that if we’ll stop the rolling market, but ‘nung nag GCQ tayo, it follows na dumami ang mga tao na nasa palengke o sa CBD – the workers, the business men, the market goers. So instead of ending yung rolling market the more na pinalakas natin, so that we can at least catch those residents. It’s just like a catch basin para hindi na sila pupunta at maki-mingle dun sa mga other workers or yung mga tao sa palengke. “

Lawana said that the rolling market will then be a continuous activity of the city and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Objectives of the Rolling Market Project

Furthermore, Coun. Lawana said that the main purpose of the project is for the LGU to be able to bring the goods closer to the residents.

He also explained that it was created to minimize the need for residents to travel out of their barangays just to go to the central business district or the market area.

Schedule of the Rolling Market

The councilor has mentioned that they are currently identifying areas where there’s a need to conduct rolling markets.

“We are posting the schedule on a weekly basis,” said Lawana. “We have to be very careful kasi kung may area or barangay na medyo may problema with regards to the COVID o kaya yung mga lockdown, we have to avoid those areas para sigurado,” he added.
