Check Out NASA’s Free to Download “Galaxy of Horrors” Posters for Halloween

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has recently released eye-catching posters called “Galaxy of Horrors” which depict some of the most mysterious astronomical phenomena in the universe.

NASA’s Galaxy of Horrors posters are presented in the style of vintage horror movie advertisements. They feature a dead galaxy, an explosive gamma-ray burst caused by colliding stellar corpses, and dark matter, which are all based on real phenomena. Find more about these out of this world poster and the phenomena that have inspired their creation.

Galactic Graveyard Poster| Dead Galaxy

“This chillingly haunted galaxy mysteriously stopped making stars only a few billion years after the Big Bang! It became a cosmic cemetery, illuminated by the red glow of decaying stars,” described NASA.

In a dead galaxy:

  • New star birth has ceased
  • Most remaining stars are the long-lived variety:
    • Small and red
    • Give the galaxy a crimson glow

Gamma Ray Ghouls Poster| Explosive Gamma-Ray Burst

“In the depths of the universe, the cores of two collapsed stars violently merge to release a burst of the deadliest and most powerful form of light – gamma rays. These beams are unleashed and shine a million trillion times brighter than the Sun,” the space administration described.

Gamma-ray burst is among of the most energetic explosions in the universe. It can be created when dead stars collide. NASA revealed that the poster reflects how gamma-ray burst occurs in real life.

If such an event occurs close to our planet, the beam of radiation and particles could do harm. “But the rarity of these events makes that extremely unlikely,” said Judy Racusin, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

Dark Matter Poster| Dark Matter

“Something strange and mysterious creeps throughout the cosmos. Scientists call it dark matter. It is scattered in an intricate web that forms the skeleton of our universe,” stated NASA.

Dark matter’s gravity keeps stars inside galaxies and it also holds groups of galaxies together in clusters. However, scientists are yet to know what dark matter is made of.

Although the giant spider crawling across the sky on a glowing web in the dark matter poster is pure fiction, its concept goes around something called the cosmic web. And the scientific visualizations of the cosmic web, according to NASA, look similar to the spider web which can be seen in the poster.

The new “Galaxy of Horrors” posters are free to download. They were produced by NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program Office, based at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California.

Other than English, the posters are also available in Spanish. Want to view and download the posters? You can get them in high resolution at NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration website. You may click here to download.

“One of the things I really like about these posters is that if you spend some time studying the art and then maybe go learn a little more about each of these topics, you’ll see there was a lot of thought by the artists about the choices they made to highlight the science.”

– Jason Rhodes, an astrophysicist at JPL
