BSU-NPRCRTC Now a BPI-Certified Potato Seed Producer

The National Seed Quality Control Services of the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) has accredited the Benguet State University-Northern Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center (BSU – NPRCRTC) as a Certified Potato Seed Producer proving the Center has complied with the BPI evaluation team’s findings and recommendations.

On November 11, 2020, the Certificate of Accreditation was formally received by BSU – NPRCRTC.

“The Benguet State University-Northern Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center (BSU – NPRCRTC) is now a BPI-certified potato seed producer, another first in the Cordillera Administrative Region. This development means the Center can already provide clean and quality seed potato planting materials to potato growers in Benguet and nearby areas.”

-BSU

Ten years ago, the application for accreditation of BSU – NPRCRTC was denied because BSU is an academic institution according to NPRCRTC Director Cynthia Kiswa. And, to ensure continuous production of quality potato planting materials and encourage other potato seed growers in the Province of Benguet the Center reapplied for accreditation.

First in Cordillera

BSU – NPRCRTC is the first institution in the region of Cordillera to be accredited by BPI.

BSU’s accreditation is achieving another milestone, which is the result of the dedication and hard work of the NPRCRTC researchers in promoting sustainable agriculture according to Vice President for Research and Extension, Dr. Ruth Batani.

“This shows that the academe is a significant partner in the agricultural value chain.”

Furthermore, clean and quality seed potato planting materials will be provided by the Center to potato growers in Benguet and nearby areas through this new development in the region.

One of the members of the evaluation team from BPI-CAR Dr. Juliet Ochasan has stated that:

“…clients are now ensured of locally produced, quality potato planting materials because BSU – NPRCRTC went through the evaluation process and was found to be compliant with the potato seed production standards set by the government.”

-Dr. Juliet Ochasan statement

Also, Director of the Cordillera Organic Agriculture Research and Development Center (COARDC) and a pioneer researcher on potato in BSU Prof. Jocelyn Perez has said that:

“……locally available and quality seed potato planting materials would erase the notion that only imported ones are the best quality.
