BSP Warns Public Against Soaking Money in Alcohol and Other Chemicals

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has released an advisory today, August 18, 2020, warning the public to avoid soaking or washing paper money and even coins in water with detergent soap, alcohol, bleach, and any other chemicals.

“…iwasang ibabad ang salaping papel at barya sa tubig at sabong panlaba, alcohol, bleach, at iba pang kemikal.”

Actions as such, according to BSP may be considered as “acts of mutilation or destruction of Philippine currency” and are against the Presidential Decree No. 247.

“…may kalakip na kaparusahan alinsunod sa probisyon ng PD No. 247,” added the BSP.

Moreover, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas advises the public to instead observe proper hygiene, wash their hands, and to refrain from touching their face after holding objects, including money, to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19.
