Birth of a Rare Philippine Mouse-Deer in a Zoo in Poland, Captured in Video

Wroclaw Zoo, the oldest zoo in Poland has captured a video of a rare Philippine mouse-deer’s birth. The zoo claims that they are the first to have captured footage of such an event. “Nobody has succeeded in this yet,” said in a news release published on November 26, 2020.

“For the first time ever in the history of any species of mouse deer, an actual birth was filmed and then the first moment of life of the baby.”

According to Wroclaw Zoo, they had difficulty observing the mouse-deer in the zoo since they hide from people, in the grass. This was why they have installed cameras that watch animals.

The baby Philippine mouse-deer was born on November 10, 2020. Reuters reported that it was about the size of a large matchbox and weighs around a hundred grams.

This mouse-deer originated from our country, the Philippines. However, due to hunting and palm oil plantations, chevrotains are facing extinction. “There are fewer and fewer of them in the Philippines because their territories are taken for the sake of palm oil plantations,” stated the zoo.
