Banksy Donates an Artwork to UK Hospital

The famous UK street artist, Banksy, has a new artwork that is now on display in Southampton General Hospital.

According to a post on the University Hospital Southampton NHS (UHS-NHS) Foundation Trust’s website yesterday, May 7, 2020,  the world-famous artist has donated a new artwork that has been painted during lockdown to hang in one of the hospital’s corridors.

But who is Banksy Anyway?

The question “Who is Banksy?” is apparently unanswerable since the artist’s identity remains anonymous up to this date. However, the artist is known internationally for his craft. According to Artsy, Banksy’s career has been marked by experimentation, risk, and a daring playfulness. One of the many well-known artworks of Banksy is the piece called the “Girl and Balloon” which has been shredded after being auctioned in 2018.
For those who would like to see more of the artist’s artworks, Banksy has an Instagram and website where these art pieces are posted.

Banksy’s new masterpiece is called the “Game Changer.”

The artwork shows a young boy playing with a nurse doll that wears a mask and a cape, looking like a superhero while other known superheroes like Batman and Spiderman are kept in a basket on the side.

The Game Changer is now on view to staff and patients on level C of Southampton General Hospital. However, based on a Facebook post published by the UHS-NHS Foundation Trust, once lockdown has been lifted, the painting will be auctioned with all the proceeds going to NHS charities.

A Message of Appreciation from Banksy

Along with the painting, Banksy has left a letter for healthcare workers at the facility which read, “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.”

UHS-NHS Honored to Receive the Game Changer

The CEO of the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust has shown appreciation of Banksy’s artwork through a statement published on UHS-NHS’s website.

“Here at Southampton, our hospital family has been directly impacted with the tragic loss of much loved and respected members of staff and friends. The fact that Banksy has chosen us to recognise the outstanding contribution everyone in and with the NHS is making, in unprecedented times, is a huge honour.

It will be really valued by everyone in the hospital, as people get a moment in their busy lives to pause, reflect and appreciate this piece of art. It will no doubt also be a massive boost to morale for everyone who works and is cared for at our hospital.”
