Baguio City Government Releases Advisory for Angkas or Backriding for Married Motorcycle Riders


Following the announcements of DILG Secretary Eduardo Año and Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque regarding backriding for married couples, the City Government of Baguio released an advisory on “angkas” to be followed by motorcycle riders in the locality.

Angkas for Motorcycle Riders in Baguio City

Previously, Sec. Año said that “angkas” shall be allowed for married motorcycle riders or common-law couples who are living in the same household.

Today, July 11, 2020, the city government, through the Public Information Office, announced that married couples shall be allowed backriding on motorcycles as long as they present any of the following documents as proof of their relationship:

  • Photocopy of Contract of Marriage, accompanied by valid government-issued IDs;
  • Valid government-issued IDs stating that they are staying at the same address; or
  • A Barangay Certification that they are spouses, either legally or under common-law, accompanied by valid government-issued IDs;

Other Requirements for Backriding

Furthermore, riders are reminded that a protective barrier must be installed between the driver and the passenger.

Other requirements for backriding married couples include the following:

  • Mandatory use of facemasks and helmets
  • Compliance of prevailing traffic rules and regulations
