Abbott Laboratories, a company in the United States which discovers, develops, manufactures, and sells diversified health care products and services, unveiled a new, portable instrument that can tell if a person is infected by the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in just five minutes. Information about this new device has been unveiled through a press release published by Abbott in their official website.

This device is called the ID NOWCOVID-19 tests is an instrument-based, isothermal system which can rapidly detect novel coronavirus or the COVID-19. It can reveal COVID-19 positive results within five minutes while it takes thirteen minutes for it to be able to show negative results. ID NOW COVID-19 tests are lightweight, portable, easy to set-up, and are just around the size of a small toaster. In addition to that, this instrument uses molecular technology which allows it to work with a high degree of accuracy.

“The COVID-19 pandemic will be fought on multiple fronts, and a portable molecular test that offers results in minutes adds to the broad range of diagnostic solutions needed to combat this virus,” said Robert B. Ford, president and chief operating officer, Abbott. “With rapid testing on ID NOW, healthcare providers can perform molecular point-of-care testing outside the traditional four walls of a hospital in outbreak hotspots.”

Abbott ID NOW COVID-19 tests Availability

The Abbott ID NOW COVID-19 tests are going to be available this week to the healthcare providers in the United States. It is also stated on the press release that the company is working with the Administration to deploy tests to areas where they can have the greatest impact.

The ID NOW COVID-19 tests has not yet been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but it has been authorized by the FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for authorized laboratories and patient care settings use.
